Evidence for iPhone

Proof, when proof matters.

Ordinary phone photos can be edited, backdated and argued away. Witnessed seals every capture with a cryptographic fingerprint, an independent trusted timestamp and your exact location — so what you photographed can be verified, not just claimed.

The problem

A photo is not proof.

It never really was — but for years nobody pushed back. That has changed.

01

Metadata is trivially editable

The date, time and location attached to an ordinary photo can be changed in seconds with free software. Anyone challenging your evidence knows this, and increasingly they say so.

02

AI has poisoned the well

Convincing images can now be generated from a text prompt. The reasonable response — from adjudicators, insurers and courts alike — is more scepticism about every photograph, including the honest ones.

03

Disputes turn on who is believed

A deposit dispute, a rejected claim, an unpaid invoice. When both sides have photos and neither set can be verified, the outcome comes down to whose word carries more weight — which is a poor way to lose a few thousand pounds.

How it works

Capture. Certificate. Share.

Three steps, and the first one is the only one you have to think about.

Witnessed capture screen with photo, video and audio modes.

Step one

Capture

Open Witnessed instead of the camera app. Photo, video or audio. Add a case label like “Flat 3B check-out” so it makes sense to you in six months.

A Witnessed evidence certificate showing capture time, location, device and file hash, marked Verified.

Step two

Certificate

The moment you capture, the file is hashed and the hash is signed by an independent timestamp authority. Location, device and time are recorded. It takes seconds and happens on its own.

Step three

Share

Export a PDF certificate and send it with the file — to a landlord, a tenant, an insurer, a solicitor. They can verify it themselves, without going through you or through us.

Inside a certificate

What makes it hold up.

Four independent facts, recorded at the moment of capture and impossible to change afterwards without the change being obvious.

Evidence Certificate Verified
File hash 3a4f8b21c7e0…d95f4a2c92d1 A SHA-256 fingerprint of the file. Change one pixel and the fingerprint changes completely — which is how anyone can tell it hasn’t been touched.
Trusted timestamp 8 Jul 2026 · 09:41:32 GMT Signed by DigiCert under RFC 3161 — an independent authority, not your phone’s clock. Proves the file existed at that moment and not a minute later.
Location Henley-on-Thames, UK GPS coordinates captured on site, embedded in the certificate. Proves where, alongside when.
Device iPhone 16 Pro The hardware that took it, on the record — closing off the argument that the image came from somewhere else entirely.

Who it’s for

Anyone who might have to prove it later.

Landlords

Check-in and check-out inspections that an adjudicator can verify. Deposit deductions backed by evidence rather than assertion.

Tenants

Photograph the state of a place the day you move in. If your deposit is challenged a year later, you have proof that predates the dispute.

Tradespeople & freelancers

Timestamped proof that the job was finished, the work was delivered and the site was left as agreed — attached to the invoice.

Drivers

An accident scene, sealed at the roadside. Damage, position, conditions and time — recorded before anything is moved or memories diverge.

Pricing

Pay for what you need.

Most people need proof a few times a year. Some need it every week. Both are catered for — and there’s no subscription unless you actually want one.

Why you can trust it

The technical bit, in plain English.

Witnessed doesn’t ask you to take its word for anything. Every claim it makes can be checked independently, by someone who has never heard of us.

SHA-256 hash

A fingerprint of the exact file

Your photo is run through a one-way function that produces a 64-character fingerprint. Alter a single pixel and the fingerprint changes beyond recognition. It works in one direction only — the hash reveals nothing about the picture.

RFC 3161

A clock nobody can argue with

The fingerprint is sent to DigiCert, a globally trusted certificate authority, which signs it with its own time. That is the international standard for trusted timestamping, used in legal and financial record-keeping for two decades. Your phone’s clock is irrelevant — and so is anyone’s claim that you set it wrong.

GPS & device

Where and what, alongside when

Coordinates and the capturing device are recorded into the certificate at the moment of capture, so the record answers the three questions that get asked in every dispute.

Your iCloud

We never hold your evidence

Files stay in your own private iCloud database. Witnessed cannot open them, copy them or hand them to anyone. The only thing that ever leaves your phone is the hash — and a hash cannot be turned back into a photograph.

Verification does not depend on Witnessed staying in business. Anyone can hash your file with standard tools and check it against the signed token from the authority. That is deliberate — evidence that only one company can vouch for isn’t really evidence.

Take the photo you can prove.

It costs nothing to have proof ready before you need it — and there is no way to go back and get it afterwards.
